Appetitive-intellectual interaction: an approach according to Thomas Aquinas

Resumo

Aunque irreductibles entre sí, las operaciones del entendimiento y de la voluntad constituyen el dinamismo propio del viviente racional. Ahora bien, al estudiar la relación o interacción entre ambas potencias, se suele decir que el entendimiento tiene prioridad en cuanto a la especificación de la voluntad, mientras que la voluntad lo tiene con respecto al ejercicio. En este artículo, sin embargo, quisiéramos invertir el problema y analizar, desde principios tomasianos, en qué sentido se podría decir que el ejercicio de la voluntad depende del entendimiento, por una parte, y cómo puede la inclinación afectar el conocimiento de un objeto.

Abstract

Although irreducible to each other, the operations of the intellect and the will constitute the dynamism proper to the rational being. However, when studying the relationship or interaction between these two powers, it is often said that the intellect has priority in the specification of the will, while the will has priority in its exercise. In this article, however, we would like to reverse the problem and analyze, from Thomistic principles, in what sense it could be said that the exercise of the will depends on the intellect, on the one hand, and how inclination can affect the knowledge of an object.
